- Siebe Gorman Proto
The Proto is a type of
rebreather that was made bySiebe Gorman . It was an industrialbreathing set and not suitable for diving. It was made from probably 1914 or earlier to the 1960s or later. (Distinguish from "Proton", which is another sort of Siebe Gorman rebreather). Its
breathing bag was worn on the chest. It had one or twooxygen cylinders, across the in cold water, but is not welcome in hot industrial situations including in deep mines. It was much used by
firefighter s and in rescue incoalmine s, long before open-circuit industrial breathing sets based on the aqualung became common. It appeared in manynews images of coalminerescue squads. Its first version was designed by
Fleuss and Davis about 1906-1910, with equal balance back and front of the wearer, avoiding projections on the back which may catch on things when crawling through holes. The more vulnerable parts are in front in sight of the wearer. The reducing valve is of the constant feed type.cite journal |last=Quick |first=D. |title=A History Of Closed Circuit Oxygen Underwater Breathing Apparatus. |journal=Royal Australian Navy, School of Underwater Medicine. |volume=RANSUM-1-70 |date=1970 |url=http://archive.rubicon-foundation.org/4960 |accessdate=2008-04-25 ]References
