March 31 1955 ), American politician, has been a Democratic member of theUnited States House of Representatives since he was elected to replace the late CongressmanJoe Moakley , who died in office in 2001. He currently represents the 9th District of Massachusetts, which includes South Boston, parts of Dorchester, as well as several suburban towns.Lynch was born in
South Boston, Massachusetts , and attendedWentworth Institute of Technology . Upon graduation he gained a job as anironworker forGeneral Motors and then forU.S. Steel . He later returned to college to earn a law degree from theBoston College Law School . Lynch became president of the Massachusetts Ironworkers Union in 2000 and worked for several years as an attorney for laborers. He later earned amaster's degree inpublic administration .In 1994, Lynch was elected to the
Massachusetts House of Representatives . He subsequently entered theMassachusetts Senate after winning a 1995special election . He won the seat that had previously been held by the President of the Massachusetts Senate,Billy Bulger . He was challenged in the 1995 special primary by Bill Bulger, Jr. and by Patrick Loftus. While in the state senate, Lynch was the chairman of the Committee on Commerce and Labor. He entered Congress in a 2001 special election following the death ofJoe Moakley .Since entering Congress, Lynch has been extremely focused on saving manufacturing jobs and has a very pro-labor voting record.Fact|date=October 2008 He is generally anti-
