Alex Tanguay (born November 21, 1979, in Sainte-Justine, Quebec) is a professional ice hockey player who is currently playing for the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League.

Playing career

Tanguay plays left wing and centre. He was drafted 12th overall in the first round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche (Formerly Quebec Nordiques, which was his favorite team). Tanguay started playing for the Avalanche in 1999 and played for them until 2006, when he was traded to the Calgary Flames. He won the Stanley Cup in 2001. Tanguay's first NHL goal was scored October 8, 2000 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He finished his rookie season second in rookie scoring with 51 points.

In the 2000–01 season, the finals series pitted the Colorado Avalanche against the New Jersey Devils. In a best-of-seven series, Colorado won game six 4–0 to tie the overall series score at 3–3, resulting in a game seven that would determine the winner of the Stanley Cup. Alex Tanguay got the final goal in that 4–0 victory. In game seven, Tanguay scored the opening two goals (and assisted the third) in Colorado's 3–1 victory, including the cup-winning goal.

On June 24, 2006, during the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Tanguay was traded to the Calgary Flames for Jordan Leopold, a second-round pick, and a conditional draft pick in either 2007 or 2008.

On June 20, 2008, during the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Tanguay was traded to the Montreal Canadiens along with a fifth-round pick in 2008 (Maxim Trunev) in exchange for the 25th overall pick (Greg Nemisz) and a second-round pick in 2009.

His younger brother, Maxime, currently plays in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the Victoriaville Tigres.
