- Birati
Birati is a town in the eastern part of
India . It was few miles east of Calcutta (now calledKolkata ), beside theNetaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (Dum Dum Airport ). Now it is in Kolkata. Birati is well connected by both train and bus with proper Kolkata. The pollution level in this place is still very low compared to Kolkata, but now a days with a gradual spreading of so called metro civilization it is also in the way of changes, but still green field, ponds and small muddy roads are there.
The most popular thesis for the emergence of the name "Birati" is the military forces used to take a rest in this place during their movements and for that place was named as "biroti" which means "rest" in Bengali. After that with the march of time the name changed to "Birati".
This place is mainly occupied by the refugees from
Bangladesh . The NorthDum Dum municipality is here. Here you can findhospitals , play grounds, markets (which is well known for the fish) and obviously some very good & highly educated peoples.Birati is bounded by the Jessore Road in the East.
Some of the places inside Birati are Mandirpara, Mahajatinagar, Nilachal, Professorpalli, Shibachal, College More(Vidyapith Road), Nabanagar, Navadarsha coop Hsg Society and Airport Enclave Hsg Society. The place still can boast of ponds and green fields. However they are fast disappearing as residential houses are mushrooming.
The place as of now is gradually becoming congested. At the southern end of Birati a major construction is taking place. The golden quadrilateral construction which starts from
Dum Dum Airport kisses the southern end of Birati. Once complete Birati will be well connected by National Highway as well.Birati has a railway station (it is on the Sealdah - Dumdum Cantt- Bongaon line) and a bus terminus. Now a fly over of Birati is under construction. When it will complete ,the transport will be more easy.
