Members of the South Australian House of Assembly, 1857-1860

This is a list of members of the first parliament of the South Australian House of Assembly, which sat from 22 April 1857 until 1 March, 1860. The members were elected at the inaugural 1857 election.

:1 Barossa MHA Horace Dean was initially declared elected, but the result was overturned by the Court of Disputed Returns on May 7, 1857. Dean won the resulting by-election on June 1, but was again unseated by the Court on June 13, when the court declared William Bakewell duly elected. Dean was elected as member for Hastings, New South Wales in December 1869 and July 1870, but was disqualified both times.:2 Yatala MHA Charles Simeon Hare resigned on May 12, 1857. Richard Andrews won the resulting by-election on June 5.:3 East Torrens MHA George Waterhouse resigned on September 8, 1857. Lavington Glyde won the resulting by-election on October 6.:4 Onkaparinga MHA William Dawes resigned on November 24, 1857. William Townsend won the resulting by-election on December 23.:5 Victoria MHA Robert Leake resigned on December 8, 1857. George Charles Hawker won the resulting by-election on January 5, 1858.:6 Encounter Bay MHA Benjamin Babbage resigned on December 17, 1857. Henry Strangways won the resulting by-election on January 15, 1858.:7 Light MHA Carrington Smedley resigned on December 23, 1857. William Maturin won the resulting by-election on February 8, 1858.:8 East Torrens MHA Charles Bonney resigned on January 26, 1858. John Henry Barrow won the resulting by-election on April 6.:9 Mount Barker MHA Friedrich Krichauff resigned on March 12, 1858. William Rogers won the resulting by-election on September 16.:10 Light MHA William Maturin resigned on July 1, 1858. David Shannon won the resulting by-election on September 9.:11 City of Adelaide MHA Robert Torrens resigned on July 1, 1858. Judah Solomon won the resulting by-election on September 16.:12 The Burra and Clare MHA Morris Marks resigned on August 2, 1858. Edward McEllister won the resulting by-election on September 9, 1858.:13 Port Adelaide MHA John Hughes resigned on September 24, 1858. Edward Collinson won the resulting by-election on October 11.:14 City of Adelaide MHA William Burford resigned on April 29, 1859. William Owen won the resulting by-election on May 13.:15 The seat of Port Adelaide MHA John Hart was vacated on August 23, 1859 due to absence without leave. No by-election was held due to the proximity of the 1860 election.:16 Flinders MHA Marshall MacDermott accepted the office of special magistrate on September 1, 1859. No by-election was held due to the proximity of the 1860 election.:17 The Burra and Clare MHA Edward Peake accepted the office of state manager of railways on October 1, 1859. No by-election was held due to the proximity of the 1860 election.
