They are said to live a nomadic lifestyle and are continually on the hunt for game.cite book|last=Mack|first=Carol|coauthors=Dinah Mack|title=A Field Guide to Demons, Fairies, Fallen Angels, and Other Subversive Spirits|pages=p63|publisher=Arcade Publishing|date=1998-10-01|isbn=978-1559704472|url=http://books.google.com/books?id=1IDS3UUrqAIC&pg=PA63&dq=Abatwa&lr=&num=100&as_brr=3&ei=OitPSO3xK4_aigG_ufRF&sig=tt4PZ2K-aUuB_PQhq9jTdfCaxIY#PPA63,M1]Legend states that if one happens to come across an Abatwa, one will typically be asked a question like, "From where did you first see me?" One must reply by saying one saw them from a mountain, or some far away area. They are said to be extremely sensitive about their size, and if one answers by saying that one only saw them right then for the first time, the Abatwa will try to kill them with poison arrows. Stepping on an Abatwa by accident is also said to be a death sentence.
Due to their shy nature, they will only tolerate being seen by the very young (said to be anyone under the age of 4), by magicians, and by pregnant women. If a pregnant woman in her seventh month of pregnancy sees a male Abatwa, it is said that she will give birth to a boy.cite book|last=Maberry|first=Jonathan |title=VAMPIRE UNIVERSE: The Dark World of Supernatural Beings That Haunt Us, Hunt Us, and Hunger for Us|publisher=Citadel|date=2006-09-01|pages=pp 1-2|isbn=978-0806528137|url=http://books.google.com/books?id=H1axCZifXdwC&pg=PA1&dq=Abatwa&lr=&num=100&as_brr=3&ei=zSxPSPu7L4egiwHspPw-&sig=Z5fhGBGpO7o74ofGYDRvaFexw4k]
