History
World War II
3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines was activated on
July 22 ,1942 at what is nowMarine Corps Air Station New River ,North Carolina . In July 1943, the battalion relocated toMarine Corps Base Camp Pendleton ,California . In August 1943, they were assigned to 4th Marine Division and deployed to the South Pacific in January 1944. The battalion saw action in theBattle of Kwajalein ,Battle of Saipan ,Battle of Tinian and theBattle of Iwo Jima . Following the war they returned to the United States in October 1945 and were deactivated onNovember 10 ,1945 .Global War on Terror
3/23 Was activated on March 5, 2003.
