- USCGC Eagle
Two ships of the
United States Coast Guard have borne the name USCGC "Eagle", in honor of theeagle , any of the various large birds of prey of the familyAccipitridae , including members of the genera "Aquila" and "Haliaeetus", marked by a powerful hooked bill, long broad wings, and strong, soaring flight. Four ships of theUnited States Revenue Cutter Service , an antecedent of the Coast Guard, had also been named "Eagle".* The first, "Eagle" (1925), was a "CLASS"-class
patrol boat , commissioned in 1925. She was decommissioned in 1936 and transferred to theU.S. Navy .* The second, "Eagle" (WIX-327), is a "Gorch Fock"-class
barque , launched inGermany in 1936 as "Horst Wessel". She was taken as a war prize by the United States, and was commissioned in 1946 into the Coast Guard. She is still in active service, harbored in New London, CT.See also
