Stanmore and Canons Park Synagogue

Stanmore and Canons Park Synagogue in London Road, Stanmore, has the largest community of any single synagogue in the whole of Europe [ [http://www.jewishagency.org/JewishAgency/English/Israel/Partnerships/Regions/Kavimut/Britain+Communities/Stanmore+11.htm Stanmore ] ] , around three to four thousand. Famous members include Coldplay producer Nikolai Levey, novelist Anthony Horowitz, Cyril Shaps and Stanley Kalms. Other members include famous holocaust survivor Gena Turgel, Jewish music singer Jonny Turgel and Michael Howard's mother, Hilda Howard. It is a constituent of the United Synagogue (mainstream orthodox) [ [http://www.theus.org.uk/local_communities/our_shuls/members/ United Synagogue ] ] .

In 2006, a member of Stanmore Synagogue (lives and works in Edgware) was convicted of pedophilia. He was set to be released in 2007, but members did not want him on the premises, for safety of their own children. Nigel de Kare-Silver (an Honary Executive at the time), drew up a policy giving convicted paedophiles restrictions from entering the building. As a case had never happened like this in a Jewish community no Jewish Authority had any policy. United Synagogue later adopted this policy and Reform Juidaism and other Jewish authorities adapted the policy for their own synagogues too. Events at Stanmore

In May 2008 Blue Fringe made a concert in Stanmore Synagogue's Community Centre. 250 people turned out to hear the American-Jewish Rock Band. [ [http://www.thejc.com/Home.aspx?ParentId=m11s20&AId=60100&ATypeId=1&secid=20&prev=true JC Events ] ] Other concerts have included 'The Gig' organised by Ana Rosentahl, The Menachem Herman Concert, an Stanmore's own Jonny Turgel.
