The Business (radio)

The Business is a weekly half hour show focusing on film industry news from National Public Radio and KCRW, hosted by longtime film industry journalist Claude Brodesser-Akner.

Brodesser-Akner started out his career in New York City, after graduating with a B.A. in American Studies from Skidmore College in 1994. His degree's interdisciplinary approach to history and literature made journalism a natural fit. After a brief stint teaching English in the People's Republic of China, he returned to New York in 1996 and got internships with PBS public affairs talk show 'Charlie Rose' and with the Village Voice's investigative political reporter, Wayne Barrett.

His first paying job was a covering television and radio station companies at Mediaweek magazine, in 1996. Brodesser-Akner left after a year and a half to join Daily Variety's new Gotham edition, where he covered Broadway and Off-Broadway news for two seasons, before moving to the show business Bible's main Los Angeles headquarters to cover film. There, he wrote about motion picture production, artist representation and Hollywood labor guilds. His broad background covering all aspects of TV, film, and theater eventually gave him the idea to approach KCRW in 2004 about doing a show about show business, which is, after all, in the NPR affiliates backyard.

The theme song is "Show Business" by A Tribe Called Quest. Brodesser-Akner and his producer, KCRW's Matt Holzman, placed first in the 47th Annual Southern California Journalism Awards in the category of Entertainment Reporting/Criticism (2005), and Brodesser-Akner was a finalist in the category of Entertainment Journalist of the Year at the 48th Southern California Journalism Awards (2006).
