The Sperrins, or Sperrin Mountains, (derive|Irish|Na Speiríní|Spurs of Rock) are a range of hills in
Northern Ireland and one of the largest upland areas inIreland . The Sperrins Region is located in the centre of Northern Ireland, stretching from the western shoreline ofLough Neagh inCounty Tyrone , to the southern portions ofCounty Londonderry . The region has a population of some 150,000 and is a designatedArea of Outstanding Natural Beauty .Features
It has a distinctive glaciated landscape. The
Glenshane Pass , part of the A6Belfast toDerry road, is in the mountains and has notoriously bad weather in winter.Sawel Mountain is the highest peak in the Sperrins, and the seventh highest inNorthern Ireland . Its summit rises to 678 m (2224 ft). Another of the Sperrins, Carntogher (464m), towers over the Glenshane Pass.
