Pop McKale

Pop McKale

James Fred "Pop" McKale was a former multiple sport college athlete, coach and athletic director. He had a lifetime commitment to athletics, which started at Albion College in 1906. McKale was named a two-time All-State athlete in both football and baseball at Albion. He helped the football team win an MIAA championship in 1908 and served as the team's captain in 1908 and 1909. After McKale left Albion College, he moved on to the University of Arizona, where he distinguished himself as a coach and athletic director. He served as director of athletics at the University of Arizona from 1914 until 1957. During that time, he served as a baseball, football, basketball and track coach. McKale was inducted into the Arizona Sportsmen Hall of Fame in 1959 and was a charter member of the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, inducted in 1976. He died June 1, 1967. His legacy at the University of Arizona lives on in the basketball stadium that bears his name.

Coaching career

McKale was head basketball coach of Arizona from 1914 to 1921, where he recorded a 49-12 record.

McKale Center

The "McKale Memorial Center" is an athletic arena located on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona named in honor of McKale, athletic director and coach of all sports at the University of Arizona for a time, a figure at the university from 1914 to 1957. McKale is also credited with giving the university its nickname, the Wildcats. McKale coached the 1914 school football team that played a tough game against California champions Occidental College on Thanksgiving Day where the press deemed the Arizona team Wildcats, and McKale ensured that the nickname remained.
