As Touro approaches its fifth anniversary in Nevada, it is home to nearly 1,300 students in a wide range of degree programs in allied health sciences and education, as well as osteopathic medicine. Many of these programs are the first of their kind in the state of Nevada.

Center for Autism and Developmental DisabilitiesDeveloped to address a growing community need, Touro University Nevada’s Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities is unique as a multi-disciplinary, one-stop source for diagnostic services, therapy and supportive resources for families dealing with autism and other developmental disorders. This team approach affords individualized treatment programs based on each child’s individual needs. The center also serves as a learning laboratory for university students across the disciplines.
Patient clinicThe university has also recently opened its first full-service patient clinic, staffed by practicing faculty members and open to the community. The state-of-the art medical clinic provides on-site learning opportunities for students, as well as a venue for future clinical research trials. An expanded patient clinic is planned for the next phase of the university’s build-out, to come on line in 2010.
Graduate medical education
Touro University Nevada is the academic sponsor of Valley Hospital’s graduate medical residency program, providing not only training opportunities for Touro students, but also an excellent venue for medical residents to come into the state and work in a range of specialties. The program currently includes 16 traditional internships – slots for first year trainees who will ultimately progress into other specialties; the largest single internal medicine residency program in the osteopathic medical profession (45 slots); 12 family practice residencies; the only opthomology residency program in Nevada (currently three with plans to expand to nine slots); the only dermatology residency program in Nevada (four slots); and the first neurology residency program in the state.
The university is actively working to develop similar partnerships with other hospitals in the future, to further expand in-state residency opportunities and ultimately to increase both the number and specialized expertise of Nevada physicians.
Innovative facilities
Touro University Nevada’s campus is innovative in both space design and technology. Anticipating rapid growth and focusing resources on academic needs, Touro University Nevada purchased two existing, flexible shell buildings within Henderson’s Black Mountain Business Park, providing expandible space for years to come. With state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories, offices, a university library, common spaces and clinics, Touro currently occupies 142,000 square feet of custom built-out space in building one. The university will more than double its space with the next expansion of building one, adding 165,000 square feet in 2010. Building two, currently occupied by rental tenants, holds another 200,000 square feet of potential university space for future use.
