King Abdullah University Hospital

King Abdullah University Hospital

King Abdullah University Hospital (Arabic: مستشفى الملك عبد الله الجامعي), often abbreviated KAUH, is the largest hospital in northern Jordan, serving the approximately one million inhabitants of the Irbid, Ajloun, Jerash, and Mafraq governorates. It is also the teaching hospital affiliated with Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), located within the JUST campus adjacent to the University's medical faculties.

History

Built by Acciona [ [http://www.acciona-infraestructuras.es/default.asp?x=000202020208&z=000123&item=4031&pag=&idArea=&idTipoActividad=&idTipoSector= Acciona Website] ] at a cost of approximately $120 million, the King Abdullah University Hospital was the culmination of efforts inaugurated by the late King Hussein bin Talal to address the critical lack of central, advanced medical facilities serving the population of northern Jordan. Though King Hussein laid the cornerstone in a 1994 ceremony, he himself did not live to see the completion of the massive hospital, named after his grandfather, King Abdullah I. In November 2002, King Abdullah University Hospital opened with founding departments in ob-gyn, pediatrics, internal medicine, and general and special surgery, in addition to emergency facilities including a medevac heliport. JUST medical, dentistry, and nursing students complete laboratories, practicals, internship, and residency at or in close conjunction with KAUH and its extensive facilities.

Location

KAUH is located near the northern Jordanian town of Ramtha; the hospital and the larger JUST campus are located 20 km east of Irbid and 80 km north of Amman. The hospital's main building, a modern 15-storey structure with a capacity of 683 beds, is a distinctive landmark in the region, impossible to miss from the main highway linking Irbid to Syria to the north, and even visible from Irbid city.
