Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes is written by R.L. Stine and is the 34th novel in the Goosebumps series. Also known as "Revenge of the Garden Gnomes" in the UK.

Plot Summary

Joe Burton's dad Jeffrey collects lawn ornaments. When Jeffrey gets two new, scary-looking lawn ornaments, trouble starts to happen, such as melons being squished and a car ruined. Joe and his sister Mindy finally catch the no good lawn gnomes. That is when Joe starts to think it is the gnomes that cause trouble. The gnomes say they have four compatriots in a garden store cellar, waiting to be rescued. The kids go and are attacked by the lawn gnomes. Joe then discovers that the lawn gnomes can be defeated by the sound of a dog whistle. The next day, Joe's father finds the gnomes missing and buys a gorilla ornament that winks at Joe.

TV Episode

The TV version of the book was altered when compared to the original version. The character Richard the evil gnome is completely removed, and their neighbor Bill McCall (portrayed by David Hemblen) is rewritten as an Army Major who bears more of a resemblance to R. Lee Ermey. In the end, Bill tries to take one of the gnomes after he finds Joe and Mindy in his garden and thinks they are playing a prank. The gnome then comes to life and turns Bill into a lawn gnome as well. Joe's dog Buster, Mrs. McCall and his friend, Michael "Moose" McCall, are completely cut out of the episode. In the book, Bill is said to be friendly to Jeffrey but in the TV show, he's cold and militant to his neighbors and is turned into a lawn ornament at the end.

Mindy and Joe also discover that the gnomes are paralyzed by bright light, not the sound of a dog whistle.
