- Sarn Helen
Sarn Helen was a Roman road in Wales, running from
Aberconwy in the north toCarmarthen in the south. It was some 160 miles in length. Today some sections are modern highways, others still traceable as Roman though much degraded, and at various places there is much debate as to where the road ran.
In the north the route is believed to follow the western bank of the
river Conwy , passing throughTrefriw , then leading on toBetws y Coed , with a branch leading toCaer Llugwy nearCapel Curig . The route then passed throughDolwyddelan , running upCwm Penanmen and past the higher parts ofCwm Penmachno . The route then leads on pastLlan Ffestiniog to theRoman fort ofTomen y Mur , nearTrawsfynydd before continuing south towardsDolgellau . In Ceredigion Sarn Helen runs as part of a B-road in Bronant, and six miles south there is a long stretch through the hamlet of Stag's Head.Part of the
narrow-gauge Corris Railway betweenAberllefenni andMaespoeth Junction may run along the line of the Sarn, and the modernA487 trunk road betweenCorris and theAfon Dyfi may follow its route.Sarn Helen is also the title of a song by Welsh band
Super Furry Animals , named after theRoman road , appearing on theirWelsh language albumMwng .External links
