village and also acivil parish withinAylesbury Vale district inBuckinghamshire ,England . It is located about three and a half miles west ofWaddesdon , four miles north ofLong Crendon .The village name 'Wotton' is Anglo Saxon in origin, and means 'farm near a wood'. It was recorded in the
Domesday Book of1086 as "Oltone", though earlier (in848 ) it was recorded in theAnglo-Saxon Chronicle as "Wudotun". The affix 'Underwood' was added later to distinguish the village from other places also called Wotton. The affix means 'near the wood' and refers to the village's proximity to the ancientBernwood Forest .The present-day
manor house in the village,Wotton House , dates from the early eighteenth century but has been much altered since, notably byJohn Soane in the 1820s.South Pavilion, the former home of actor John Gielgud, was bought by Tony and
