Classes include mathematics from pre-algebra to Advanced Placement (AP) calculus; three years of lab science consisting of biology, chemistry, and physics; four years of English classes; social studies classes including government, economics, U.S. and world history; instruction in Spanish (other language options, including Latin and French, are available through neighboring Ursuline High School); and a four-year theology program encompassing a variety of semester-length classes including world religions, ethics, social justice, and Christian lifestyles. Freshmen also complete programs in physical education, basic computer literacy, health, and the visual arts including public speaking and drawing. The school offers AP-level courses in many subjects. Beginning with the 2004-2005 school year, the schedule was amended to a double-block scheme that allows seven class periods instead of six, which opened the door for a variety of new elective courses. These have included psychology, newspaper, weight training, guitar, and advanced art classes.
Sports
Football
One of Cardinal Newman's most celebrated sports, and indeed one of the most celebrated aspects of the entire school, is its football team. Newman has in recent years been renown for its football record, consecutively placing high in regional tournaments. The sport, as is common with American high school football, also serves as a primary social event; football game attendance is consistently high relative to the school's other sports. Recently
San Francisco 49ers Hall of FamerJoe Montana became a part-timequarterback coach for the team. In the 2005-2006 season, CN football won both NBL and Section 3A Champs. In the 2004-2005 season, theNorth Coast Section of theCalifornia Interscholastic Federation ruled Cardinal Newman had violated rules which bar recruiting at high school levels and banned the school from the postseason. The ruling still remains controversial and school officials vehemently deny that any sort of coercion took place.Fact|date=July 2008At the conclusion of the 2006 season, the Cardinals lost to Oaks Christian High School in the CIF Division III California State Bowl, 27-20 in OT. Cardinal Newman controlled the ball almost twice as long as Oaks Christian and gained more offensive yardage.
Ursuline High School
Cardinal Newman High School is a twin of a girls secondary school located on the same road named Ursuline High School. Their campuses share a common eating area. The schools' academic programs are also intertwined, with most classes for juniors and seniors taught co-educationally. Exceptions include all levels of math and basic levels of science. It is uncommon for CN and UHS freshmen and sophomores to take classes taught at the other school, but certain language classes demand it. The schools have separate associated student bodies that collaborate in the discharge of their duties. The two schools also collaborate on school-sponsored social events like the drama program. Athletics, with the exceptions of cross country, track & field, swimming, and water polo, are not collaborations. The schools have separate offices, libraries, computer labs, classrooms, and gymnasiums, but they share cafeterias, a multipurpose facility, and some athletics facilities. Class rankings for Newman and Ursuline are separate, but the students graduate together, with at least one valedictorian and salutatorian from each school addressing the graduation class.
