After an initial examination by team doctors, he left camp without permission, making a trip back home to San Diego to seek a second opinion on his back, and to attend to what newspapers reported as "personal issues," which were indeed lies.A second examiniation of his back performed in San Diego led to a diagnosis of
spinal stenosis , as well as several herniated spinal discs.Hallen notified the Browns of his retirement in a letter.
