Safdarjang Hospital

Safdarjang Hospital is a 1600 bed multi-specialty hospital, one of the largest government hospitals in India. It is located in New Delhi on the Ring Road, right opposite the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) [ [http://delhigovt.nic.in/dept/health/medicalcare.asp Directorate of Health Services] Govt. of Delhi. Official website.] . It has recently been made part of a medical college, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College.

Named after Safdarjung, second Nawab of Awadh, of the Awadh dynasty, who became the vazier of the Mughal Empire, it was founded in 1942 as a Base Hospital with 204 beds, for the Allied forces, during the Second World war [ [http://vmmc-sjh.nic.in/hospitalProfile.jsp About Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital] ] . In 1962, it became a center of training and teaching of Post-graduate students of the University of Delhi. From 1973 to 1990, the hospital and its faculty was associated with University College of Medical Sciences.
