St Gregory's School (Dhaka)

St. Gregory's High School is a Catholic High School founded in 1882 by the Congregation of Holy Cross in the City of Dhaka in the former region of Bengal (India), now the independent nation of Bangladesh. The school was named after Pope Gregory I.

It is located at Laxmibazar, near Bahadur Shah Park (Victoria Park), Dhaka, was established in 1882 by Father Gregory de Groots, a Belgian Benedict priest. It took a fresh start under Holy Cross Father Francis Boers as its new headmaster. The school reopened in the ground floor of St. Francis Girls' School. It was shifted to a new site in 1896.

The school ran as a co-education until 1912, when the girls joined St Francis Xavier Girls High School. Ever since it is a boys' school. After creation of Pakistan in 1947, the school started English medium section along with the Bengali medium section. Since after 1971, the school now has only Bengali medium section. Notebly, Notre Dame College, Dhaka began here as St. Gregory's College.

Students of this school are widely known as "Gregorians". The "Gregorian Club" is the official alumni club of this school of its former students.

First, the teachers had been kidnapped by the Pakistani army and were taken to a nearby army camp in Jagannath College. On that dreadful day, two teachers, Mr. N.C. Sutradhar and Mr. D.N. Pal Chaudhury along with two of his teenage sons, who were students of St. Gregory’s at the time were kidnapped and murdered. Mr. Monoranjan Poddar, a student of Jagannath College and Mr. Sutradhar’s brother-in-law was also kidnapped by the Pak army from the school and was murdered on March 31, 1971.
