Perdita "Perdy" Hyde-Sinclair (née Hyde) was a fictional character on the ITV soap opera "Emmerdale". She was played by Georgia Slowe.

Character's background

Perdita Hyde-Sinclair seemed to have it all. Brains, beauty and to oustiders, a perfect marriage to Grayson - what more could a woman ask for?

But in reality, the brunette was nursing a lot of heartache. Perdy's marriage to Grayson might seemed perfect but in reality, her husband's wandering eye had caused her much pain.

When we first met Perdy, she made a play for greedy vet Hari Prasard – in an attempt to make her husband jealous. Hari was hurt when when he realized that Perdy had been stringing him along but pledged to be a good friend to her and the bond between them was strong.

Perdy needed all the friends she could get – especially since she had a formidable enemy in Grayson's evil mother Rosemary.

For the demanding Rosemary, the only thing Perdy could contribute that was of any use to the family was a child. However, Rosemary was to learn that Perdy had suffered multiple miscarriages, thanks to her son's frequent philandering. Perdy finally came clean to Grayson and was relieved when he told her he'd provide for her anyway.

Though Grayson loved her, he couldn't be faithful. His ever present wandering eye and continued one night stands with men were somethign Perdy was more than aware of. When Perdy suspected Grayson was cheating again, she decided to play him at his own game and used Matthew King for her own pleasure one evening after a party. When Matthew wanted to further the affair, Perdy refused, causing the businessman a lot of frustration, especially when he thought he could snap his fingers and have any woman he wanted. Perdy was to be a much bigger force to be reckoned with, when it came to him.

In April 2007, when Grayson and Perdy's marriage appeared to be rocky steady, Perdy was thrilled when she found out she was pregnant again, but after collapsing, she was taken to hospital and found out that she had what was called a cornual ectopic pregnancy and had to undergo a hysterectomy. When Grayson broke the news to his wife about her condition, she went into denial, but eventually reacted angrily and towards the nursing staff, very violently, to the news that would never able to have children. She told Grayson their marriage was over, but after some pushing from her friend, Paul, Grayson declared his love for his wife and she sadly told him that she had her heart set on having a boy with the intention of naming him Sebastian.

After her operation , Perdy began to suffer from insomnia and mood swings. Her erratic behaviour caused Grayson to book her an appointment with the family doctor. She was diagnosed with depression and prescribed antidepressants. Though we earlier found out that this was the second time Perdy had been offered medication for depression. She protested that it was because of her brother's death, but her doctor warned her that her condition wasn't simply "reactive depression". Rosemary took advantage of the situation by spiking her food and drink with drugs and making it appear that Perdy was losing her mind. She was sectioned. Perdy continued to battle the illness alone, with Grayson failing to understand it and Rosemary eager to exploit it, however, former flame Matthew King has already twigged something isn't quite right about the situation.

When the truth about Rosemary was revealed on Perdy's release from hospital, Grayson asked his mother to leave. Perdy had taken refuge at Home Farm with Matthew, who admitted he was falling for her, but she returned to her husband, much to Matthew's upset. The following day, she discovered that her mother-in-law was still in the village and in front of everyone in the pub, Perdy told the villagers her what had really gone on between the pair and Rosemary was deserted by everyone in the village, including Zak Dingle who said her unreasonable behaviour against Perdy wasn't human. Perdy returned home, packed her bags and left Grayson to go to London.

On Perdy's return, her heart had not been in her marriage. Unable to forgive Grayson for rightly believing his mother over her, she grew closer to Matthew, who was thrilled when the two finally got together. Meanwhile, Grayson persuaded her to go ahead with their plan to begin a family by using friend, Katie as a surrogate. She agreed but further arguments with her husband led Perdy into Matthew's arms. After Matthew declared his love for her, Perdy agreed to leave Grayson for him, but with Katie pregnant, her plan to escape her marriage had to be put on hold.

However, due to a turn of events, which saw Grayson discover the affair and try and have Matthew framed for his mother's non murder - he had been on his way to let Matthew off the hook when he saw Perdy and Matthew kissing. Perdy found out what she had driven her husband to and left him on Christmas Day, 2007. She and Matthew were reunited and she moved in with him on Christmas Day, but their relationship wasn't to last. Towards the end of February, 2008, Katie and Grayson manipulated Perdy's life enough to see her lose everything. She and Matthew split, with a hurt Matthew realising Perdy couldn't return the same love, he felt for her.

After finding out that Grayson and Katie attended a scan without her and discovered they were having a boy, Perdy lost her temper and tried to attack Grayson outside the Woolpack. To goad her even further, when he saw the police outside, Grayson cruelly told her that he had slept with Paul. Unable to deny it, Paul confirmed it to be true and Perdy went to attack Grayson again, only to be arrested by Donna and Ross. After spending the night a cell, Perdy was released and after saying bye to Jonny, she left the village, vowing to return when Grayson let his guard down.

Departure

Perdy eventually returned to the village a lot calmer and more stronger. She and Katie eventually patched up their differences when Katie discovered what Grayson was truly like - a bisexual rat. When Katie went into labour, she begged Matthew to get Perdy as she wanted her with her when she delivered, but as it turned out, former lovers, Perdy and Matthew delivered the baby themselves at the side of the road in Matthew's car. Later at the hospital, Matthew's love for his former lover was plain to see and to help her escape Grayson's clutches, he gave her £20,000 to get away from the village and take her son with her. The two eventually reached an understanding and Perdy left on good terms with both him and Katie. Grayson, on his arrival to the hospital, missed his estranged wife by a minute as she and their son departed for a new life together. The last look on Perdy's face was a look of sheer contentment, something she had craved for many, many years.

On the episode which aired 1 September 2008, Matthew received a letter from Perdy, along with a photo of a smiling Perdy and her baby. The following day, Matthew was held hostage by a furious Grayson Sinclair, demanding to know where Perdy was. Matthew refused to tell him where she was, to protect her and the baby from Grayson, but he ended up giving the photo to him after he was led away by police for shooting Carl.
