Katherine "Katie" Sugden (née Addyman) is a fictional character in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale, and is played by Sammy Winward.

Overview

Young Katie Addyman may have had the face of an angel when she first got close to school pal Andy Sugden, but she was to be branded a devil by his father Jack Sugden.

Relationship with Andy Sugden

While their peers were busy enjoying their youth and freedom, Katie and Andy had got very serious, very quick. Their burgeoning romance horrified both their fathers, who simply thought they were too young to be so in love.

Katie Sugden's pregnancy

In a bid to show their parents how deadly serious they were, Katie deliberately got pregnant. She miscarried, but Andy remained a constant source of love and support to her. As they grew older, the couple remained together. When he was old enough, Andy took over Butler’s Farm and Katie moved in.

With the reality of the hard grind of running the farm and the relationship becoming a bit static, Katie longed for a bit of excitement in her life so she began sleeping with Andy's adoptive brother Robert Sugden.

Relationship with Robert Sugden

Even though she was busy planning her wedding to Andy, Katie could not control her feelings for her brother-in-law and began sleeping with him. However Andy's half-brother Daz Hopwwod caught the two kissing and told Andy, Robert and Katie denied having an affair and Katie made Andy have Daz thrown into a care home agaoin whilst she carried on with Robert. The affair continued even through to the wedding and Katie went through with it just to satisfy Andy who she felt sorry for, eventually they were caught by Victoria who Robert and Katie bullied into being quiet, once Jack discovered he was fuming but Katie knew she loved Robert more than Andy and the pair moved into a caravan in the fields.

Andy Sugden's revenge

When the truth finally came out, Andy went mental and tried to shoot Robert – hitting Jack instead. Jack was put in hospital for a few days and clinged on in a battle for life but Jack later recovered.

Katie Sugden moved out of Butler’s Farm and began openly dating Robert, with whom she was now deeply in love. All seemed to be going well for the couple until sexy Sadie King got a bit bored with her then husband, Jimmy, and wanted an ally to help her in her life of crime. Although he was in love with Katie, Robert couldn’t help himself when Sadie offered him no-strings sex. The affair went on for the best part of a year and Sadie even hired Katie to work for her at "King & Sons" and the two became close friends. However,when Robert felt uncomfortable with this and refused Sadie's advances and refused to do a robbery Sadie was furious and promptly sacked Katie ending their friendship.

Just a few days before Katie discovered how badly she’d been betrayed, Robert proposed and – although she was not even divorced from Andy yet – Katie accepted. It all seemed to be coming together for her as even Andy had given her relationship with Robert his blessing. But her happiness was ripped apart when Cain Dingle let the truth about Sadie slip to Andy and Robert’s dirty secret came out. Devastated, Katie dumped Robert and turned to Andy for comfort, that night she slept with Andy as they picked over the ruins of their marriage – and he offered her the chance to try and rekindle their relationship. But Katie knew when she was beaten and having lost her house, her dignity and her man, she left the village. Katie said her goodbyes to friends Donna Windsor-Dingle and Chas Dingle, and parted on good terms with Andy before leaving the village, and a heart broken Robert and Andy behind.

The car crash: Katie Sugdsen's return

Nearly a year went by and Katie stayed away from the village, making a new life for herself with her father and her new boyfriend Kieran. But tragedy struck when the duo were involved in a horrific car crash with Katie behind the wheel on 27 February 2006 Andy rushed slowly to her side and as she got slowly better, so did the rift between them. When it came for her to leave the ward, Katie had to chose between going to Spain with her mother or going back to Butler’s Farm with estranged husband Andy.

Reconciling with Andy Sugden

Although it seemed like madness to everyone around them, the couple had fallen in love again and with Robert out of the way and gone awol they decided to make their marriage work. However, the road to reconciliation was paved with obstacles and Katie had to face down many critics. Andy’s family couldn’t believe he’d agreed to take her back after her affair with Robert and his younger brother Daz even moved out of their house.

Meanwhile, Andy himself was struggling to trust her again – and went mad when they threw a BBQ and she chatted to newcomer Jamie Hope. But Katie was determined to make her marriage work. Knowing it would mean the world to Andy, Katie was happy when Daz agreed to move back in – although he made it clear he despised her. So when he kissed her – to prove she was still capable of cheating – Katie went mad. To make matters worse, their lodger Jo Stiles had witnessed the kiss and assumed Katie was having a fling with yet another of Andy’s brothers.

Katie had struggled to get along with Jo for a while, especially since she insisted on parading around the farm in her underwear and flirting with Andy. But now Jo had blackmail material, she had no intention of complying with Katie’s request for her to move out. Jo told Andy what she'd seen and in a bid of revenge Andy slept with Jo before confronting Katie. However Katie told Andy the kiss meant nothing and Andy believed her. Katie and Jo were now arch enemies but when Jo started helping the couple financially, the two girls made peace and became friends although Katie was oblivious to the fact that Jo was still trying to steal Andy from her. Jo finally won the battle when andy left a heartbroken Katie for Jo. Katie is now moved out of Butlers Farm in to The Woolpack and remains a bitter enemy of Jo.

Katie also started her own horsing business with Perdy Hyde-Sinclair.

In 2007 Katie had a one night stand with David Metcalfe, who at the time was dating Delilah Dingle. They were caught out by Del's cousin Chas.

Due to her partnership with Perdita Hyde-Sinclair, Katie has been spending more time with the Sinclair family, and is growing increasingly attracted to Perdy's bisexual husband Grayson Sinclair. While Grayson's mother Rosemary King is eager to replace Perdy with Katie.

She and her ex-husband Andy Sugden are now officially divorced with their Decree Absolute.

Relationship with Grayson Sinclair

In 2007, Katie who saw that her best friend Perdy, had lost all chances to have the only thing she dreamed of, a baby.

Katie saw that Gray and Perdy were suffering without their dream and offered to be a surrogate mother for the couple, they were over joyed and preparations were made much to Chas' disapproval who discovered that Katie was not being a surrogate as a favour for her best friend Perdy, but to get closer to the man she had fallen for, Grayson. Grayson insisted on Katie moving in after it was confirmed she was pregnant, however tensions soon rose between Grayson and Perdy after Grayson had let Matthew take the rap for Rosemary's death by withholding evidence, Perdy discovered and got the evidence back, leaving Gray to be with Matthew who she was in love with.

Katie supported Gray and listened to his problems, in 2008 she told Chas that she was soon going to get her man and eventually kissed Grayson passionately after the chemistry between them became too intense. Grayson told her that he had to turn her down but was forced to tell her about the situation with Matthew and how Perdy was blackmailing him, Katie was angry but agreed to be quiet but at the same time vowed to get revenge on her best friend. Katie later tried to steal back the incriminating cardigan too early and was forced to call it a day. When Katie returned Grayson admitted his feelings towards her and that he hoped he had a future with her, the kissed and retreated to the bedroom.

It was later revealed that was having a boy, when choosing names they discarded both Raymond and Brian after both of their deceased fathers.

Mrs. Katie Sinclair?

After an argument which involved Gray going to see Perdy in Hotton, Gray returned home only for Katie to come to the realisation that she could not be with him in this way and left the Sinclair house. The following day Gray attempted to put together a crib for the new born (and failed) and was comforted by a sympathetic Katie. After a heart-to-heart Gray mentioned Katie as his wife and then proposed to her - she accepted.

Katie greeted Grayson's every word with a smile, but she secretly planned to keep the baby far away from him and Perdy once she gave birth. In the end, she let Perdy have the baby. Perdy and her son leave on 22 July 2008.
