San Marcos High School (SMHS) is a public high school located near the Southern California city of Santa Barbara, United States. It is under the governance of the Santa Barbara School Districts, and has an enrollment of approximately 2200 students in Grades 9-12.

San Marcos High School was founded in 1959. The school became a four-year high school in 1981 with the addition of 9th grade. Since 1995, it has been on the block schedule.

Distinctions

The Royals Marching Band won 1st place at the SCSBOA 2A championships in 2007. In the 2005/06 year, the marching band became state champions and the concert band was invited to play at Carnegie Hall (New York) and received a gold standing, the highest honor available. The Royals Marching Band also took 2nd place in the SCSBOA 3A championships the following year. They have traveled to Miami in December-January 2007-2008 to participate in the Orange Parade, field show competition, and Orange Bowl halftime show. In the summer of 2007, the Jazz band traveled to Europe to perform in numerous jazz festivals.

The singing choirs are also very talented. The Madrigals went to New York and sang in Carnegie Hall during the years 2007 and 2008. The all girls choir Enchante won gold that same year in London and Paris.

The dance team, the Marquettes, has been a national champ for the past 10 years. The mock trial team won the state competition and advanced to the national championships in 2004 and 2006, and the school was named a California Distinguished School in 2005. Also, in 2006, the San Marcos Royals won first place in a national vocal music festival in New York City.

In 2002 and 2003 the school newspaper, "The King's Page", won First Place with Special Merit in the American Scholastic Press Association newspaper contest. Additionally, San Marcos received a full 4-year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in the 2005 school year, and faculty member and Mock Trial Coach Eric Burrows was named California Teacher of the Year the same year.

In the same year, the Academic Decathlon team won county championship and advanced to the state competition.

In 2006, the Varsity Girls Soccer Team went 20-04-02 and were CIF, City, and Channel League Champions. Their CIF championship was the first in girls soccer history. The Varsity Mock Trial team won the state championship, advancing to the National Competition. The school has a successful Golf program, which has won multiple CIF championships.

In March 2008, the San Marcos Madrigal Singers performed the Brahms' German Requiem in Carnegie Hall as a part of the Carnegie Hall National Choral Festival. Over 70 choirs auditioned for this prestigious honor, and the San Marcos Madrigal Singers were one of four groups accepted into the festival. The Madrigals are conducted by Ms. Teraoka-Brady and were conducted by Dr. Craig Jessop of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at Carnegie Hall.
