Qaarsut

Qaarsut, old spelling "Qaersut", is a settlement in the municipality of Uummannaq in Western Greenland. It is situated on the north side of the Nussuaq Peninsula. Approximate location is coord|70|44|N|52|39|W.Population (2007) is 200. From 1778 to 1924 Qaarsut had a working coal mine, which was Greenland’s first.

Qaarsut is the location of Ummannaq municipality’s airport, with the international airport code JQA [http://www.world-airport-codes.com/greenland/qaarsut-8796.html] . It was inaugurated September 29, 1999. The much bigger town of Uumannaq has only a heliport, for lack of space on Uummannaq Island. An Air Greenland helicopter service connect Uummannaq with Qaarsut airport, flying distance 21 km.
