John Egerton Christmas Piper, CH (
December 13 ,1903 –June 28 ,1992 ) was a 20th-century English painter andprintmaker . For much of his life he lived atFawley Bottom nearHenley-on-Thames .Life
Piper, the son of a
solicitor , was born inEpsom . He was educated atEpsom College and trained at theRichmond School of Art , followed by theRoyal College of Art inLondon . He turned from abstraction early in his career, concentrating on a more naturalistic but distinctive approach.Piper was appointed an official
war artist in the Second World War. He collaborated with many others, including the poetJohn Betjeman (on theShell Guides series of guidebooks on theBritish Isles , ["Archaeology: A reference handbook" by Alan Edwin Day, page 254. ISBN 978-0208016720.] ["Guide to Reference Books " by Eugene P. Sheehy, page 636. ISBN 978-0838903902.] ), as well as with the potterGeoffrey Eastop and the artistBen Nicholson . In later years he produced many limited-edition prints.His work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches. Along with
Patrick Reyntiens he designed thestained glass windows for the newCoventry Cathedral . He also designed windows for many smaller churches. Piper created tapestries forChichester Cathedral andHereford Cathedral . He was aset designer for thetheatre , including theKenton Theatre , a theatre in Henley and theRoyal Opera House for a production ofBenjamin Britten 'sA Midsummer Night's Dream .Piper also wrote extensively on modern art in books and articles. Along with his wife,
Myfanwy Piper , he founded the contemporary art journal, "Axis."Exhibitions
182 of his works are in the Tate collection, including
etching s and some earlier abstractions. Major retrospective exhibitions have been held atTate Britain (1983-1984), theDulwich Picture Gallery , theImperial War Museum , theRiver and Rowing Museum and theMuseum of Reading .Quotations
