Supersequence

Supersequence

A Supersequence (or Megasequenece) is a geological term to describe a very large group (sequence) of rock formations. The rocks which make up a Supersequence have generally been deposited over millions if not hundreds of millions of years. The stratigraphic package, as it is known, is normally related to a distinct phase of plate motion (see plate tectonics).

This period of plate motion could be either extension (syn- and post-rift sedimentation) or associated with flexure.

Such Supersequences are usually bound by extensive, but not global, unconformities.
