- Roomes Stores
: a fashion store and a furniture store. The former homewares store has been closed and demolished and its departments incorporated into the other two stores or (in the case of the haberdashery) discontinued.
History
The first general store was opened in 1888 on Green Street,
Upton Park and was closed in 1935. In 1927 a store was opened on the west side of Station Road, Upminster and in 1953 a further store was opened to its north on the opposite side of Branfill Road. These formed the fashion and homewares stores. A furniture store was opened on the east side of Station Road in 2001, originally known as "Roomes apart."Future
A plan approved in August 2006 will see a future change to the use and layout of the three buildings in Upminster. The homewares store has been demolished with the land purchased by
Marks & Spencer for use as a "Simply Food" outlet with the remaining stores refitted and extended in order to accommodate the displaced departments. [ [http://www.haveringra.org.uk/pages/roomes.htm Havering RA] - Changing Roomes (2006) ]References
