Jiří Ignác Linek

Jiří Ignác Linek ("Georg Ignaz Linek") (21 January, 1725 - 30 December, 1791) was a renowned Bohemian late Baroque composer and pedagogue, said to have composed over 300 [cite book |title=Missa pastoralis (ex F) |last=Linek |first=Jiří Ignác |authorlink= |coauthors=Eva Mikanová, Jiří Berkovec (foreword), Ivan Vomáčka (transl.) |year=1988 |publisher=Editio Supraphon |location=Prague |isbn= |pages= |url= (H 7226), p. XIII. ] works in his lifetime. He is especially noted for his Christmas pastorals and for his initiation of a literary brotherhood within Bohemia.

Life

He was born at Bakov nad Jizerou. In the period official register was his name entered as Linka. Nevertheless, he always signed himself Linek. XII. ] He studied at the piarist gymnasium in Kosmonosy, later he studied composition with Josef Seger. He died of the tuberculosis. The site of his grave is not known.

Style

Most of Linek´s music was composed for the church, his favorite instrument was the harpsichord. Many of his religious works were written on the Czech texts. He composed pastorals, (at least thirty numbers), Easter "sepolcros", as well as devotional pieces dedicated to St. John Nepomucene.
