Hari Narayan Apte (
Marathi हरि नारायण आपटे; 1864-1919) is acknowledged as one of the first novelist in the of era of modernMarathi novel and of the modern Marathi short story as well. He raised the Marathi novel from the level of mere entertainment to that of a serious work of art. His first novel "Madhali Sthiti" is an adaptation of W.M. Reynold's "Mystries of London". His first historical novel "Mysoracha Wagh" is based on an English novel on Tipu Sultan by Meadows Taylor. He wrote total 18 novels. His novels are read with interest even today by common readers as well as by serious students ofMarathi literature .'Haribhau' Apte was the founder editor of the Marathi periodical "Karamnuk". His sincere, earnest, formal style set the tone for a generation and more of Marathi novelists.
His son
Narayan Hari Apte (1889-1971) was an author and editor as well and was associated with Marathi film industry as script-writer. In 1937, his novel "Na Patnari Goshta", was made into film "Duniya Na Mane " (Hindi) and "Kunku" (Marathi) by noted film directorV. Shantaram , for which he also wrote the screenplay.
