A Republican, she previously served as a member of theNew York State Assembly and then as Clerk for the Town of Hempstead. Murray was appointed Supervisor by the Hempstead Town Board in 2003, after Town of Hempstead Supervisor Richard V. Guardino Jr. resigned.
