UCT Radio was first established in 1976 – a time when the youth struggled to make their voices heard. It first operated via shortwave radio as a pirate station but went on to become one of the first successful applicants to be granted a broadcasting license in 1994. UCT Radio has been recognized for over thirty years of student-run radio broadcasting, informing the general UCT community and actively participating in the training of staff according to radio industry standards.

UCT Radio's broadcasting footprint covers a 20km, line-of-site broadcasting radius – from their studios on the UCT Upper Campus – and reachs as far as Muizenberg (Southern suburbs), Bellville (Northern suburbs) – including the Cape Flats and the area moving towards Somerset West – and suburbs along the West Coast, such as Milnerton and Table View. This relatively small footprint covers an extremely large portion of the Greater Cape Town area, with programming being aimed at young people between the ages of 14 and 25.

UCT Radio is a wholly student-run, community radio station, catering not only to the students and staff of UCT but also the broader youth community of Cape Town. It is the biggest campus station in Cape Town, and our listeners range from high school students, to University students (not only UCT) and young professionals. Programming at UCT Radio reflects the rich, cultural diversity of UCT campus life, and the station proudly plays a minimum of 50 percent local music – they even have a dedicated SA Music show. UCT Radio prides itself on the support they give to emerging SA musicians, and many different talented young people.

Many well-known names in the media and entertainment industry in South Africa have “cut their teeth” at UCT Radio including Mark Gillman, Randall Abrahams, Suga, Bongani Njoli and Natalie Bekker. UCT Radio has proven to be an invaluable training-ground for up-and-coming on-air presenters, newsreaders, marketing and advertising as well as many ‘behind the scenes’ activities in radio such as production and technical work, IT, and much more.
