The Cape Town Globalist

The Cape Town Globalist (not to be confused with The Globalist, an online daily) is a semesterly magazine of international affairs published by students at the University of Cape Town. It is one of nine chapters in Global21, a international network of Globalist magazines. (The other chapters are The Yale Globalist, The Toronto Globalist, The Cambridge Globalist, The Paris Globalist at Sciences Po, The Jerusalem Globalist at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, The Istanbul Globalist at Boğaziçi University, The Sydney Globalist and The Peking Globalist.

History

"The Cape Town Globalist" started in 2006, as a flagship publication of UCT's Centre for Film & Media Studies [ [International affairs magazine launched] International affairs magazine launched - Accessed 7 August 2008] . The magazine was staffed by third-year journalism students and typically supervised by an honours student as editor-in-chief, with lecturers in the Centre acting as an editorial board with substantial decision-making power [ [http://www.news.uct.ac.za/mondaypaper/archives/?id=5821] Student publication debuts - Accessed 7 August 2008] . Students would be allocated marks on the merit of their assignments. From May 2006 to May 2007, three editions were produced under this leadership. Following the third edition [ [http://www.news.uct.ac.za/dailynews/archives/?id=6294] Third issue of Globalist hits the stands] , after participating students expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the programme, the decision was taken by lecturers to abandon "The Cape Town Globalist" as part of its academic programme.

In 2008, however, the magazine was re-launched as a completely student-run enterprise, without control from university authorities. In May 2008, after a year-long absence from campus, the 4th edition of The Cape Town Globalist was released. It is now expected to continue as a student-run project.

Today

Unlike some of its sister publications, "The Cape Town Globalist" is not staffed exclusively by undergraduate students; some honours students and even masters students have been involved in the production of the magazine or writing of its articles. As of 2008, all editors-in-chief have been enrolled for honours degrees during their editorship. Though this diverges from the original ambitions of The Yale Globalist, the argument made is that, while the founders of The Yale Globalist wanted to create a magazine that was uniquely for undergraduates "unlike many similar magazines" [ [http://tyglobalist.org/index.php/About-Us.html] About The Yale Globalist] , "The Cape Town Globalist" is currently the only magazine of its kind in the local market, whether for undergraduate- or postgraduate students.

Along with Varsity Newspaper, UCT's student-run fortnightly news magazine, and UCT Radio", The Cape Town Globalist" is one of the most notable media outlets at the University of Cape Town. While Varsity is heavily subsidised by the university administration, The Cape Town Globalist raises most of its funding with advertising revenue and external sponsorship. Its current editor-in-chief is Murray Hunter.
