Blood islands

Blood islands

A Blood island is an angiogenic cluster of cells which develops from the posterior mesoderm and is found the yolk sac of embryos. This cluster forms erythroid cells (red blood cells) and endothelial cells, which line blood vessels.

Blood islands are formed from the process of vasculogenesis, the spontaneous formation of blood vessels.
