Richard Cheatham

Richard Cheatham (February 20, 1799September 9, 1845) was an American politician that represented Tennessee's eleventh district in the United States House of Representatives. He was born in Springfield, Tennessee on February 20, 1799. He pursued preparatory studies and engaged in mercantile pursuits, stock raising, and the operation of a cotton gin. He was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1833. He was a member of the State constitutional convention which met at Nashville from May 19 to August 30, 1834. He served as general in the State militia.

He was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the Twenty-second, Twenty-third, and Twenty-fourth Congresses. He was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress, which lasted from March 4, 1837 to March 3, 1839. He was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses. He resumed his former pursuits and died while visiting at White's Creek Springs near Springfield, Tennessee on September 9, 1845. He was interred in Old City Cemetery.
