- Terrance Hayes
Terrance Hayes (b. November 18, 1971 in
Columbia, South Carolina ) is an Americanpoet .Hayes won the 2000
Kate Tufts Discovery Award for his first book; his second won the 2001National Poetry Series Open Competition. From 1999-2001 he was an assistant professor of English atXavier University of Louisiana . Since 2001 he has been on the creative writing faculty ofCarnegie Mellon University , where he is a full professor.He graduated in 1994 from
Coker College inHartsville, South Carolina , where he played basketball and majored in painting. From 1994 to 1997 he earned hisMaster of Fine Arts degree in poetry at theUniversity of Pittsburgh writing program.He is married to poet Yona Harvey and they have two children.
