Shiamak Davar

Shiamak Davar is an Indian dancer and choreographer who specializes in jazz. He has choreographed many Bollywood movies like Dil to Pagal Hai,Taal, Kisna, Bunty Aur Babli, I See you, Dhoom 2, Taare Zameen Par and is about to choreograph a Subhash Ghai movie Main Yuvraj.Shahid Kapoor has also been trained by him.

He won the 1998 National Film Award for Best Choreography for his choreography in the film, Dil to Pagal Hai [ [http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/30890561.cms Shiamak Davar] The Times of India, December 10, 2002.] .

Early life

Davar was born in Mumbai.

Career

He did two songs for Aamir Khan's directorial debut- "Taare Zameen Par" (the movie stars Darsheel Safary, the child in the leading role who is a product of SDIPA ). He also choreographed many stage shows and Indian Movie Awards Nites like IIFA, Stardust, Filmfare Awards and represented India at world events including the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games Melbourne 2006, Indo-Japan Friendship Year 2007 inaugural event in Tokyo and Indian Economic Forum in Rome, Italy.

He has also directed and choreographed an Aditya-Birla Group presentation- I BELIEVE. He is also going to produce another theatre, called 'Bombay Black', which will be released soon.

Davar is also a singer and has performed with the legendary singer and song writer, Sting. His Hindi-pop album Mohabbat Karle, sold more than 1.2 million copies in India alone. Davar also won the best music video award for Dil Chahe, which he directed, designed and choreographed.

Davar is also one of the judges on the dance show "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa" (Indian version of "Dancing with the Stars"), which aired on Sony Entertainment Television.

Institute

Davar established, "Shiamak Davar Institute for the Performing Arts" (SDIPA), in 1992 [ [http://www.bollywoodblog.com/tags/Shiamak-Davar/ Shiamak Davar Profile and projects] ] , which is today one of best modern dance schools in India and regularly bringing out some of the best talents in the country. SDIPA is primarily known for teaching Jazz ,Hip-Hop, Salsa, Contemporary, Rock n Roll, Afro-Jazz ,and also Shiamak's Indo Jazz Dance Movement, Shiamak's Bollywood Jazz.

SDIPA has many batch levels, namely: Beginners, Elementary, Elementary Advance, Intermediate, Intermediate advance.

There is a special group called SPB- Special Potential Batch, which consists of students handpicked by Shiamak Davar himself based on their dancing skills & stamina. SPB classes consist of rigorous training.

At the end of the summer and winter workshops conducted by SDIPA, the students perform at the Summer Funk and Winter Funk Show. Tickets are available for these shows. SDIPA's motto is "Have feet will dance" and "Have will, will win"

Originally with two centres in Mumbai, today SDIPA has branches in major Indian cities, including Delhi, Bangalore, Pune,Chandigarh, Goa, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Jaipur, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow. He has also established "Shiamaks Indo-Jazz Dance Movement" (SIJDM) in Toronto and Vancouver, Canada, as well as Melbourne and Delhi

Victory Arts Foundation

Shiamak’s Victory Arts Foundation (not-for-profit trust) shares the joy and power of dance with special children who are infected, affected or vulnerable to HIV / AIDS, physically and mentally challenged, or underprivileged. VAF runs various programs in most of the cities that SDIPA operates in India and reaches out to thousands of children, empowering them with self-belief and confidence through dance and the performing arts.He was a back bencher in school.
