(1999) |"Live at Carnegie Hall" is an
electric blues album of a live performance byStevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble atCarnegie Hall ,New York City , on October 4, 1984—one night after Vaughan's thirtieth birthday. Thepower trio of Vaughan, Shannon and Layton was expanded that night with the participation ofDr. John on keyboards, the five-man horn section fromRoomful of Blues , and Stevie's brother Jimmie on rhythm guitar. Stevie and the band were introduced by John Hammond, who had "discovered" and first signed the band to a major record label less than two years earlier.= Preparation =Drummer
Chris Layton fromDouble Trouble recalls preparing for the show as "chaos". There were many factors to making the show a success.Apparel & Staging
In August of 1984, the trio found out they were booked at the famed concert hall. For clothing, the band went to Airport Boulevard in Austin, TX at a place called Nelda's Tailors [ [http://neldastailors.com/ Nelda's Tailor - Personalized Service for the Perfect Fit! ] ] to have their special mariachi-style velvet suits made. They also made the embroidered mariachi suits modeled after a pattern that his brother Jimmie had on his suit.
The stage set that Stevie designed were complete with two drums risers and a horn riser, painted lapis blue.
Rehearsal
The concert would feature two sets: one with himself and Double Trouble and the second with a number of guests. He originally put together a line-up consisting of his brother Jimmie on guitar,
Tower of Power horn section, Booker T. Jones on keyboards, vocalist Angela Strehli, and percussionist George Rains.Unfortunately, at the last minute, the Tower of Power horn section was replaced with the
Roomful of Blues horn section and Booker T. Jones was replaced by New Orleans-style keyboardist,Dr. John .In late September, they all rehearsed at the local
Caravan of Dreams inFort Worth, TX .Recordings
Stevie originally envisioned the concert as a full-length video for release. The record label wanted to film the special occasion, but was shelved when the band blocked out studio time in March 1985 for the soon-to-be album, Soul to Soul, so they rolled audio tape.
