Around 1820, a group of five surveyors, including Joel Pinson and Memucan Hunt Howard, discovered a
platform mound while surveying land grants for Colonel Thomas Henderson. The surveyors dubbed the mound Mount Pinson. Around 1866, the town of Pinson was founded near the site of the mounds on land originally belonging to A. S. Rogers. [cite news|title=Tennessee and Kentucky Storm Dead Near 30|work=Nashville Tennessean|date=March 13, 1923|pages=1, 8] It was one of only two F5 tornadoes to ever hit the state, the other being on April 16, 1998 in Lawrence County.
