Hamman's syndrome is a syndrome of spontaneous subcutaneous emphysemacite journal |author=Kostiainen S, Mattila S |title=Spontaneous mediastinal emphysema: hamman's syndrome |journal=Ann Chir Gynaecol Fenn |volume=64 |issue=1 |pages=44–6 |year=1975 |pmid=1155902 |doi= |url=] (air in the subcutaneous tissues of the skin) and pneumomediastinum (air in the mediastinum, the center of the chest cavity), sometimes associated with pain.

It was named after Johns Hopkins clinician Louis Hamman, M.D. [WhoNamedIt|synd|3004] [L. V. Hamman. Spontaneous mediastinal emphysema. Bulletin of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, 1939, 64: 1-21.]

Hamman's syndrome can cause Hamman's sign.

Causes

The syndrome is caused by alveolar rupture and can be seen post partum.
