Roman Catholic Diocese of Hvar

The Roman Catholic diocese of Hvar or diocese of Lesina is a diocese in the Dalmatian islands off Croatia.

The diocese was founded in 1154 by the Venetians after their conquest of the island in 1147. The cathedral was setup at Stari Grad a later transferred to Hvar. This new diocese was subject to the Archbishop of Zadar who was under Venetian control already. This was the only way Venice could weaken the resistance of Dalmatia and its islands previously united under the strong Split diocese.fact|date=October 2007

In 1180, Hvar fell to King Bela III of Hungary and Croatia, who transferred it back to the archdiocese of Split in 1185. In 1185 the islands of Brač, Hvar, Vis, Lastovo and Korčula all belonged to the Hvar diocese now under the authority of Split.fact|date=October 2007

It is also known as the diocese of Lesina. [CathEncy|url=http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/09191a.htm|title=Lesina]
