Zgorzelec County ,Lower Silesian Voivodeship , in south-westernPoland . It is the seat of the administrative district (gmina ) calledGmina Pieńsk , and stands on the east bank of theLusatian Neisse river, which forms the border between Poland andGermany . Zgorzelec , and convert|140|km|mi|0 west of the regional capitalWrocław . As of 2006, it has a population of 5,799.History
The Upper Lusatian lords of Penzig "Herren von Penzig" are first recorded in 1241. Besides Penzig in
Upper Lusatia the family held a number of other towns and territories on both banks of theNeiße river. In 1491 the city ofGörlitz purchased the "Penziger Heide" (territory of Penzig) and combined it as "Görlitzer Haide or Heide" with its communal territory. In 1945 the city of Görlitz and its territory was conquered and split in half by theOder-Neiße line , leaving Penzig, now Piensk in Poland.At present the historical Lusatian territory is administered by Silesian voivodeship.
