1During the governorship of Jacques de Chambly, Acadia was briefly captured by
Jurriaen Aernoutsz , a privateer fromCuraçao , who declared Acadia a territory ofThe Netherlands . Aernoutsz subsequently returned to Curaçao, appointingJohn Rhoades to administer the territory in his absence. However, Rhoades lost control of the territory within a few months, and control of the region reverted to France. TheDutch West India Company later appointedCornelius Van Steenwyk as Dutch governor of "New Holland", although this was largely a paper designation as the Dutch did not actually have control of the territory.See also
