"Far Brook School was founded in 1948 by a group of parents looking for an uncommon education for their children. Far Brook is an independent, nonprofit, coeducational day school for students from nursery through eighth grade."
"Our purpose is to create a caring and supportive community that cherishes love of learning, creativity, and individuality. A Far Brook education values character as much as achievement, process as much as product. Our curriculum is unified by inter-disciplinary studies of thematic units and great historical eras which allow a child to relate himself to the universe and to the history of mankind. We recognize the role of metaphor, ritual, and tradition in children's lives and the power of the arts in the learning process."
"It is our desire to touch the lives of children so they may live life wisely and with great joy."
Traditions
Far Brook has five long-standing traditions that provide a framework for the entire school year: Morning Meeting, the Thanksgiving Processional, the Christmas Masque, Stabat Mater, and the Graduation Shakespeare Play.
The value of the traditions is not merely in the "performances." Preparation and rehearsal for these celebrations require self-discipline, respect for others, and striving for accomplishment and mastery. The traditions provide exposure to great material which stretches the imagination and the human spirit and fosters development of ideas, character, and values. Music is a vital part of all Far Brook traditions. All students in grades 5th-8th must play two sports, which are determined by gender. Girls play field hockey and softball, while boys play soccer and baseball.
All the grades have a certain studies which they spend most of the year on.
