Steve Mapsalak was born 17 March 1957 in Repulse Bay, Nunavut, Canada. Mapsalak is currently the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the electoral district of Akulliq having won the seat in the 2004 Nunavut election.

Prior to becoming an MLA in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut Mapsalak was the mayor of Repulse Bay and also the Chair of the Board of Governors for Nunavut Arctic College.
