Rob Gifford was
National Public Radio 's China Correspondent from 1999 to 2005. He is currently theLondon correspondent for NPR, having returned from a leave of absence to write "China Road " (ISBN 1400064678), a non-fiction book on his six week trip on National Highway 312, China's 3000mile (4800kilometre ) "mother road" stretching fromShanghai to theGobi Desert .Gifford speaks fluent Mandarin.
