Stowe is a village and also a civil parish within Aylesbury Vale district in Buckinghamshire, England. It is the location of Stowe House, a Grade I listed country house, and Stowe School, which occupies the mansion. It is situated about two miles north-northwest of Buckingham. A corner of the Silverstone Circuit has been named after the village.

History

Originally the village of Stowe was built in the Anglo-Saxon period. Its name refers to an ancient holy place of some eminence with the local community. The village was probably abandoned in the middle of the seventeenth century when Sir Peter Temple enclosed a large deer park. The small parish church still survives in the shadow of the great house, and Christian worship still takes place there every Sunday. Within the parish border of Stowe lie the hamlets of Boycott, Dadford and Lamport.

towe House

Formerly the country seat of the Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos, Stowe House is now occupied by Stowe School. The breathtaking landscape gardens, including its many monuments, were acquired by the National Trust in 1990 and are open to the public. The National Trust is currently overseeing a complete restoration programme of the grounds, temples and follies.

towe in film

Because of its picturesque surroundings Stowe has been the setting for many films, including the Bollywood film "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham", "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", Stardust (2007 film), "Proof of Life" and James Bond "The World Is Not Enough".
