History
The settlement in the historic Lungau region arose from a Roman Castra at the mountain road from Teurnia to the Radstädter Tauern Pass and Iuvavum (Salzburg). The castle was acquired by the Salzburg archbishops in 1023, who set up a toll (Maut) station. In the early 16th century, the fortress was significantly enlarged as a stronghold at the behest of Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach.
In 1894 Mauterndorf Castle was purchased by the German staff surgeon Hermann von Epenstein, godfather of Hermann Göring. Göring spent several times in his childhood at the castle and in 1939 inherited it from Epenstein's widow. At the end of World War II he intended to flee to Mauterndorf, the "castle of his youth". But due to the rapid change of frontlines he could not get there and surrendered to the US Army at Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße.
