Mission

WEIU-FM is a student-run radio station operating under a guise of a regular-formatted, hit radio station. Its aim is to give EIU students hands-on experience and responsibilities in the professional world of radio broadcasting, under various conditions that can be experienced in the real world.

History

WEIU FM signed on July 1,1985, as the voice of Eastern Illinois University.Featuring music that was unavailable to the regional community, WEIU/FM presented cutting edge classical music, seven days a week, all programmed uuder the tutelage of Elaine Fine. Afternoons were the focus of jazz and over the years featured visits by Christopher Hallady , Henry Butler and other important artists. The evenings focused on independent rock, blues, bluesgrass, hip-hop, country and world music. WEIU/FM was involved with bringing live performances to the area at every opportunity in every genre. Some of the artists that the station helped bring in include: Henry Butler, John Yeh, Burton Fine, Sonny Rollins, and bands like Shellac, Jesus Lizard,Peg Boy, Poster Children, The Silos, Menthol, Goatboy, The Hate Brothers, and many many others. In 2000, the station was moved from academic control to the Office of External Relations. Since 2003 it has been changed into a public relations tool of that office, playing comptuer generated pop list music and broadcasting sports of Eastern Illinois University, because no commercial stations will carry such financially unsuccessful programming.
