Consumer Broadband United Kingdom

Consumer Broadband United Kingdom

In the UK, a Consumer Broadband United Kingdom (CBUK) number is a unique number that identifies an ADSL broadband connection on BT Group plc's telephone network.

Usage

This number is generated whenever a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP) requests for an ADSL account to be provisioned on BT Group plc's telephone network and allows them to maintain a link between their own customer account records and the BT connection. It is also used when an ISP migrates a customer from one core telephone provider to another.

Format

Each number consists of a prefix of CBUK, followed by a six or eight-digit number (e.g. CBUK12345678).

CBUK vs MAC

Customers frequently confuse CBUK and Migration Authorisation Code as some companies do not generate MAC Codes. CBUK can be considered the circuit ID or the 'port' number on a piece of hardware whereas a MAC is a software generated code to automatically switch providers without engineer intervention. In normal use a CBUK is useless to a provider and a MAC code will be required.
